186. Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden

Friday, June 17, 2011 - Friday, September 16, 2011
For the first time, Ohioans will have unfettered access to the most famous characters created by Dr. Seuss as part of a national touring sculpture garden. The Cat in the Hat, the Grinch, Sam I Am from Green Eggs and Ham, Yertle the Turtle, Horton the Elephant, and The Lorax (Seuss's groundbreaking environmental book) are now immortalized in 4' to 6' bronze sculptures as a tribute to the literary and artistic legacy of Dr. Seuss, aka Theodor Seuss Geisel.

163. Second Annual LEAF Plant Sale

Start a garden with your kids, it doesn't have to be big, just grow a watermelon, or a pumpkin!!

Second Annual LEAF Plant Sale: May 14, 2011 3:00pm

Are you looking for ways to cut back on expenses, eat healthy, and live “greener?” Did you plan to start your own seeds this year, but didn’t quite find the time. Whether you are a new gardener or an experienced “urban famer,” we have the event for you. Join the Lakewood Earth and Food Community and Lakewood Garden Center for the second annual LEAF Community Plant Sale. Lakewood Garden Center will once again generously host the sale being held on Saturday, May 14 from 3-5 p.m.
Local farmers have seedlings for sale, from zucchini and peppers to heirloom tomatoes of every shape and size. Last year’s vendors, Rennheber Gardens and RidgeBridge Farms will both make return appearances, with additional vendors to be announced.
While you pick up your plants, don’t forget to grab a few bags of compost to help get your garden off to the right start. For one day only (May 14), Lakewood Garden Center will donate $1 to the LEAF Community for each bag of compost sold. Not only will the organic matter improve your soil and improve your harvest, but you will also be supporting a great cause!

MUD PIES

11:00 am – 12:30 pm
Hershey Children’s Garden; free

ICE CREAM
June 1 - August 31
Noon – 3:00 pm
Geis Terrace; $

Here’s a fun Tuesday outing for the littlest Garden visitors. Drop in to Hershey Children’s Garden to find everything your child needs to make a make-believe masterpiece: we’re talking mud pies. Many a child’s first introduction to the wonders of Hershey Children’s Garden — a diminutive wonderland for kids — has been through the artful arrangement of decorations on a plate of well, mud! Wonderful things ensue when kids are then left to their own devices to explore the Garden’s pond, tree house, maze, water pumps, and wonderful plantings.

But wait — there’s more. We’ll be offering ice cream on Tuesday afternoons on the Geis Terrace. After making a pretend-pie, reward creativity with a frozen treat. Of course, non-mud pie-making adults — with or without kids — are welcome to have at the ice cream as well!

Date: Tuesdays June 1 - August 31

22. Schoepfle Garden

With the beautiful weather today and spring blooming all around why not spend some relaxing time at the Schoepfle Garden in the Lorain County Metroparks.  Wander through 70 acres of botanical gardens and natural woodland bordered on one side by the Vermilion River. The garden features collections of rhododendrons, roses, cannas, hostas, various shade plants, along with many varieties of shrubs, topiaries and trees. Whether you choose to follow one of the guided tours available throughout the year, or just wander freely at your own pace, it's a wonderful way to spend a morning or afternoon. Be sure to bring a camera!

The newest addition to Schoepfle Garden is the musically themed Children’s Garden that was added in 2007. Children, young and old, can climb the Rocky "G" Clef, crawl through the Flute-A-Pillar, and ride the restored carousel.  Awesome!
